I was first elected in the 1991 general election representing the riding of Parksville-Qualicum in the Legislative Assembly and served as a Deputy Whip and Caucus Chair in the NDP government.
I ran for re-election in 1996 and was defeated, but won the 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017 elections for the Nanaimo constituency.
I was appointed as the NDP Government Caucus Chair in July 2017.
I was born in Nanaimo and raised in Coombs.
Whether it’s homelessness or health care, I work hard to bring forth the local issues that impact my constituents and fight for their rights in the legislature.
I served as a director and president of the Mid-Island Consumer Services Co-Operative, Chair of the United Way for Nanaimo, President of Planned Parenthood, President of the Community Law Office, and on numerous other community organizations.
I enjoy reading everything from history and biography to fiction. My favourite novelists include, W. O. Mitchell, Margaret Atwood and Charles Dickens.
We have two children, Jessica (husband Ray) and Parker (wife Shoko) and three grandchildren, Portia, Archer and Alasdair. I have practiced law in Nanaimo (now very part-time) since 1980 and I work with my wife Sharon and our Son Parker who are also lawyers. Sharon and I have celebrated over 44 years of marriage.
